Hair Loss

Hair can become thin or sparse for a number of reasons, the most common of which is an inherited condition called male- or female-pattern baldness. Hormonal changes and scalp infections can also contribute to hair loss. Patchy hair loss sometimes occurs when the immune system attacks hair follicles.

Most people, both men and women, shed 50 to 100 hairs each day. Because other hair is growing at the same time, normal hair loss generally doesn’t result in thinning hair. However, overall hair loss occurs when the normal cycle of hair growth is disrupted. Both men and women who are concerned about hair loss come to the Quatela Center for Hair Restoration in Rochester, New York. Patients from Buffalo to Syracuse and beyond enjoy the improved confidence that comes with a full, healthy head of hair.

Hair Loss in Men

Male pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia) can be inherited from a person’s mother or father and is the most common reason for men to lose hair. There are other less common causes as well, including stress and certain medications. In order to recommend an appropriate hair restoration method, we must first diagnose the cause of the hair loss. For patients with male pattern hair loss, it is helpful to understand how this condition affects the growth cycle of the hair.

Hair Loss in Women

In addition to affecting men, androgenic alopecia affects women. This is called female pattern hair loss. The condition in women is typically not as drastic as it is in men; instead of creating bald spots and a receding hairline, it typically causes diffuse thinning over the top of the scalp. Patients bothered by female pattern hair loss often benefit from hair replacement surgery. Other causes of hair loss in women, such as stress, hormonal issues, and thyroid abnormalities, often respond to medical treatment. As with men, effective treatment of hair loss in women begins with an accurate diagnosis.

Classify Your Hair Loss

Before performing hair transplant surgery, we diagnose the cause of hair loss and classify its degree. This process involves careful examination of the scalp to determine the extent of hair loss, the density of the remaining hair, and the number of follicular units available for hair transplant surgery.

About Hair Growth

In order to understand hair loss, it’s helpful to learn about the normal growth cycles of the hair. Losing an average of 100 hairs a day from the scalp is perfectly normal. Androgenic alopecia (male/female pattern hair loss) occurs when specific androgens (hormones) such as dihydrotestosterone cause susceptible hair follicles to die and gradually stop producing hair.
