Benefits of FUE Hair Transplant at the Quatela Center

Follicular unit extraction, also called follicular unit excision, involves carefully removing natural groupings of 1 to 4 hairs (follicular units) from hair-bearing areas of the scalp and meticulously transplanting them one by one to thinning or balding areas. This technique produces natural-looking hair regrowth and leaves no linear scar on the back of the head.

While many practices use suction-based technology for FUE, our surgeons prefer the Dutch method. Performed with the WAW FUE system,  it involves a handheld, trumpet-shaped punch controlled by a foot pedal. It offers the following advantages:

    • Increased precision when harvesting grafts
    • Reduced graft harvesting time
    • Gentle graft harvesting
    • Consistently high graft quality
    • Decreased donor-site healing times by several days (in many patients)

Even patients who wear their hair very short or undergo eyebrow transplants enjoy results that look completely natural thanks to the skill and artistry of the specialists at the Quatela Center for Hair Restoration.

FUE vs. FUT: Which Hair Transplant Method Is Best?

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) is a hair transplant technique that involves removing a linear strip of the scalp, separating the follicular units, and transplanting them where needed. Both FUE and FUT provide fantastic results for men and women experiencing hair loss. As part of our comprehensive approach to hair regrowth and retention, the hair transplant surgeons at the Quatela Center for Hair Restoration will discuss all your options and help you determine the best methods for achieving your goals.

    FUE

    1. Make punch incision around follicular units
    2. Extract follicular units
    3. Repeat until enough grafts are harvested
    4. Transplant grafts

    FUT

    1. Harvest strip of scalp
    2. Divide strip into slivers
    3. Dissect grafts into follicular units
    4. Transplant grafts

Is FUE Hair Transplant for You?

The best candidates for the FUE technique meet one or more of the following criteria:

    • Want to fill in bald or thinning areas.
    • Have small areas of hair loss such as the eyebrows or a linear scar from FUT.
    • Prefer to keep their hair short in the donor area.
    • Want to minimize interruption of their workout routine.

The first step in deciding if you are a good candidate for FUE is to meet with one of our hair restoration surgeons for a private one-on-one consultation.

    Your FUE Procedure

FUE hair restoration surgery begins with a density count to determine the optimal donor site. Your dedicated hair restoration nurse then shaves the hair in the donor site extremely short and numbs the scalp with a local anesthetic.

During the procedure, you are seated or lying face down or on your side. Once the grafts have been harvested, we numb the recipient site with a local anesthetic. Then, our hair transplant specialists carefully transplant the grafts one at a time. They ensure each graft is transplanted with attention to the natural hair growth angles and patterns.

    Keeping You Comfortable

You should set aside an entire day for your procedure, which can take 6 to 10 hours. We ensure you feel comfortable and cared for the entire time and provide amenities, including:

    • Pro-Nox™ nitrous oxide to control discomfort and calm any jitters
    • Lunch and snacks so you won’t be hungry
    • Movie and music streaming to prevent boredom

    FUE Recovery Timeline

Our meticulous, minimally invasive approach means recovery is quick with few restrictions on your activities. Our FUE patients recover along the following general timeline (experiences vary):

Day of surgery:Return home and rest.
Day after surgery:Ready to return to non-strenuous work and activities (avoid sweating or straining).
Day 3:You can gently shampoo your hair.
1 week:Ready to resume your usual hair-washing routine, sleeping position, and activities.
3 months:New hair growth becomes noticeable, then sheds and regrows.
    6 months:Transplanted hair fills in.
    12 months:Final results are established.

For proper healing and optimal results, closely follow our  pre- and post-operative instructions.

    Additional precautions:

    • Do not smoke for at least 4 weeks, as it interferes with the healing process

What Is the Average Cost of FUE Hair Transplant in Rochester, NY?

The cost for an FUE hair transplant varies with the specifics of your procedure. During your hair transplant consultation with one of our double board-certified facial plastic surgeons, you will receive a personalized price quote that includes the procedure and six months of follow-up care. At that time, we can also discuss financing plans. Although hair transplantation is an investment, the results are permanent and may be less expensive than other hair loss treatments when factored over a lifetime.

    FUE Hair Transplant FAQ

    Is FUE hair transplant painful?

Your scalp is numb during the FUE procedure, so discomfort is minimal. In addition to allowing for greater control over the grafts harvested, patients have reported that the gentler method of acquiring grafts with the Dutch method has made it more comfortable than other methods they have undergone. Our providers and staff have noticed patients have fewer complaints of pain with this method of FUE.

I’m from out of town. How long should I plan to stay in Rochester after my surgery?

We usually have hair restoration patients stay in Rochester, New York, overnight. After that, it’s safe to fly or travel long distances. Patients may choose to stay in the Carriage House, our private, onsite recovery suite adjacent to the Lindsay House. We also have secured special rates with premier hotels close to our facility. Learn more about our support for patients who travel.

How will I feel after surgery?

It is normal to experience facial fullness, headaches, and disrupted sleep initially; these side effects decrease as the healing process progresses.

Will everyone know I’ve had a hair transplant?

This is where careful selection of a qualified hair restoration specialist is essential. Applying the principles of hair restoration is not enough. Because hair restoration is an art, a natural result is not something “just anyone” can manufacture. Most patients with realistic expectations want their hair to reflect more of the age and energy they feel inside while retaining a natural appearance of their own unique features. Consistently achieving an undetectable result is the sign of a successful hair restoration specialist.

If you’re ready to enjoy thicker, fuller, natural-looking hair, request your consultation online, or call the Quatela Center for Hair Restoration in Rochester, NY, to schedule.
