How Does PRP Help Hair Growth?

PRP stimulates the hair follicles so that hair can regrow by promoting healing and the formation of new cell growth. It’s also effective in stimulating inactive hair follicles that have stopped growing to revert back into the growth phase. Results vary for each individual patient; however, PRP therapy has been found to be effective in a variety of medical procedures.

Can PRP Be Combined with Hair Transplant Procedures?

Yes, PRP is often used to supplement surgical hair transplant treatments like FUT and FUE as it stimulates hair follicles and in turn encourages new hair growth. During your consultation with Dr. Quatela, Dr. Lee, or Dr. Montague, he or she will advise on the best treatment plan for you.

How Is the PRP Procedure Performed for Hair Growth?

During your consultation, we will review your health history, explore your history of hair thinning or hair loss, and, based on this information, decide whether you are a candidate for PRP. If you are a candidate, you will meet with one of our Patient Consultants, who will review the cost of the procedure and schedule a date for your first PRP procedure.

The day of the procedure, the first step is to have a small sample of your blood drawn. After it has been collected, it will be spun down in a centrifuge using the EmCyte® system to separate out the PRP. A local anesthetic will be used to numb the scalp. Lastly, your provider will inject the PRP directly into the area of the scalp where it is needed.

How Many Sessions of PRP Are Necessary for Hair Regrowth?

The number of sessions depends on the amount of loss and your desired results. PRP can be performed multiple times every couple of months or as a 1-time treatment. Subsequent procedures can be discussed with Dr. Quatela, Dr. Lee, or Dr. Montague.

Is There Downtime Associated with the PRP Procedure for Hair Loss?

There is no downtime after a PRP treatment. Once the local anesthetic wears off, which may take a few hours, the scalp may be slightly tender, but patients do not experience much pain with the procedure. Patients can drive themselves home after a treatment, and exercise is restricted for the rest of the day after treatment.
