Non-Surgical Hair Restoration

The Quatela Center is pleased to offer non-surgical treatments as a complement to your hair transplant procedure. At our Rochester clinic we carry a selection of products that can nourish and strengthen hair for healthy maintenance, as well as offering platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments to encourage new hair growth.

What Is Non-Surgical Hair Restoration?

Surgical hair restoration available in the form of FUE or FUT, have become a popular choice among patients, but non-surgical treatments can serve as great complements for certain patients. Read below about the options we have available.

How Effective Is Rogaine® for Hair Loss?

The active ingredient in Rogaine revitalizes shrunken hair follicles, increasing their size. With continued use, applied to the scalp twice a day, Rogain provides the following benefits:

  • Follicles gain even greater volume
  • Their growing phases become longer
  • They produce longer, thicker hairs

Rogaine Extra Strength for Men is the strongest FDA-approved hair re-growth product safe enough to be sold without a prescription. Rogaine works on the follicles in your scalp, where the problem lies, not on the hair on your head.

Can Propecia® Regrow Hair?

Propecia increases the number of scalp hairs. Generally, you will not be able to grow back all of the hair you have lost. It can only work over the long term if you continue taking it. If you stop taking Propecia, you will likely lose the hair you have gained within 12 months of stopping treatment.

How Does Propecia Work?

DHT is a male hormone thought to cause hair follicles to shrink (miniaturize), contributing to male pattern hair loss. Finasteride (the active ingredient in Propecia) blocks the formation of DHT, and in this way, appears to interrupt a key factor in the development of inherited male pattern hair loss in men. Propecia, a prescription tablet taken once a day, has been proven to effectively lower DHT in the scalp.

Propecia is for use by men only and should not be used by women or children.

Can PRP Regrow Lost Hair?

PRP treatments are non-surgical, in-office procedures to help reverse hair thinning and encourage new hair to grow. PRP is the portion of your blood that contains growth factors that stimulate and restore hair growth when injected directly into the scalp where hair is thinning.

How Does PRP Help Hair Growth?

PRP stimulates the hair follicles so that hair can regrow by promoting healing and the formation of new cell growth. It’s also effective in stimulating inactive hair follicles that have stopped growing to revert back into the growth phase. Results vary for each individual patient; however, PRP therapy has been found to be effective in a variety of medical procedures.

How Is the PRP Procedure Performed for Hair Growth?

During your consultation, we will review your health history, explore your history of hair thinning or hair loss, and, based on this information, decide whether you are a candidate for PRP. If you are a candidate, you will meet with our patient consultant, who will review the cost of the procedure and schedule a date for your first PRP procedure.

The day of the procedure, the first step is to have a small sample of your blood drawn. After it has been collected, it will be spun down in a centrifuge using the EmCyte® system to separate out the PRP. A local anesthetic will be used to numb the scalp. Lastly, your provider will inject the PRP directly into the area of the scalp where it is needed.

How Many Sessions of PRP Are Necessary for Hair Regrowth?

The number of sessions depends on the amount of loss and your desired results. PRP can be performed multiple times every couple of months or as a 1-time treatment. Subsequent procedures can be discussed with Dr. Quatela, Dr. Lee, or Dr. Montague.

Is There Downtime Associated With the PRP Procedure for Hair Loss?

There is no downtime after a PRP treatment. Once the local anesthetic wears off, which may take a few hours, the scalp may be slightly tender, but patients do not associate much pain with the procedure. Patients can drive themselves home after a treatment, and exercise is restricted for the rest of the day after treatment.
