An advanced approach to platelet-based hair restoration using a structured fibrin matrix to help your body's own platelets support thinning follicles for longer.
Platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM) treatments use an advanced form of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) created from your own blood to stimulate the production of a higher quantity and quality of hair when injected into thinning areas. The fibrin matrix allows platelets to stay active at the treatment site longer than PRP, the platelet-based hair restoration treatment that has long been part of our practice.
At the Quatela Center for Hair Restoration, Dr. Vito Quatela, Dr. Heather Lee, or Dr. Alex Montague can discuss PRFM and our other treatment options with you during your personal consultation, as part of a comprehensive approach to hair loss that includes both surgical and nonsurgical paths tailored to your preferences, lifestyle, and concerns.
Our blood contains red and white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. PRFM is created with the same concentrated plasma used in platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments, which is then converted into a fibrin matrix through a controlled process. The fibrin matrix is a scaffold that holds platelets in place at the treatment site rather than allowing them to disperse quickly.
When PRFM is injected directly into thinning areas of the scalp, growth factors address hair loss by:
Results vary for each patient; however, platelet-based therapy has been found to be effective in a variety of medical procedures.
PRFM is an autologous, all-natural substance that offers several benefits for people dealing with hair loss, including:
Because it comes entirely from your own blood, PRFM carries none of the risks associated with synthetic chemicals or drugs, making it a safe, natural option for eligible patients.
The best PRFM candidates are healthy adults dealing with early to moderate hair thinning, where follicles are still active but need support. PRFM can strengthen hair that’s already there, but it can’t bring back follicles that have stopped producing. If your hair loss has progressed past that point, a hair transplant is likely the better path forward, and that’s something your provider can talk through with you directly.
During your consultation, we’ll go over your health history and the pattern of your hair loss to determine whether PRFM is the right fit. From there, you will meet with one of our Patient Consultants, who will talk through treatment costs and schedule your first treatment appointment.
If you’re currently in a PRP treatment series with us, this transition happens seamlessly. Your schedule and pricing stay the same; we’ll simply incorporate PRFM into your remaining visits or continue with PRP if you prefer.
To get the most from your treatment, a little preparation goes a long way. For 10 days before your appointment, avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and other NSAIDs, as well as vitamin E and fish oil supplements, since these can affect platelet function and increase the risk of bruising. Skip red wine for 4 days before your procedure and all alcohol for 2 days. On the day of your procedure, have a light meal before arriving and avoid caffeine.
We perform PRFM treatments in the office with a local anesthetic, so discomfort is minimal and you can safely drive yourself home afterward.
Your provider will first draw blood from your arm, similar to having lab work done, then process it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and convert the concentrate into PRFM before injecting it directly into the areas of the scalp experiencing hair thinning.

PRFM treatments require no downtime. For the first 24 hours, avoid washing your hair or directing shower pressure to the scalp. For 3 days following treatment, take the following precautions:
The local anesthetic may take a few hours to wear off, after which the scalp may be slightly tender. Some patients experience mild redness or swelling at the injection sites. This is a normal response to treatment and typically resolves within a few hours to a couple of days. If you have any concerns about how you’re feeling after your procedure, our team is always available to help.
Because hair loss varies greatly between individuals, so do our treatment plans. At the Quatela Center for Hair Restoration, PRFM pricing is customized rather than one-size-fits-all. During your consultation, we’ll provide a personalized quote once we’ve determined whether PRFM, another hair restoration treatment, or a combination is the right choice for you.
With decades of experience serving national and international clients, we have streamlined the travel process for our out-of-town patients. Our proximity to an international airport, discreet onsite and offsite accommodations, and concierge offerings ensure your experience with us will be stress-free and rewarding.
Explore Our Travel ProgramPRFM uses the same starting point as PRP, your own concentrated platelets, then adds a step that converts them into a fibrin matrix. That matrix helps hold platelets at the treatment site significantly longer than PRP, supporting a more gradual, sustained release of growth factors. Both are effective autologous treatments; your provider can help you decide which is best suited to your unique needs.
This depends on your individual hair loss pattern and goals — some patients see the results they want from a single PRFM session, while others benefit from a series spaced out over time. At the Quatela Center, we typically plan a series of PRFM treatments across the first year, then reassess your results and any need for maintenance sessions.
Because PRFM’s growth factors release gradually rather than all at once, results tend to build slowly. Most patients notice hair loss slowing within the first few weeks, with fuller, thicker growth becoming visible over the following months as follicles move through their natural growth cycles.
